The Digger and the Flower by Joseph Kuefler
(Written for ages 3-7)
Comment: Christ is Risen! Today is a day for sharing stories of resurrection, hope, and new life. This week’s text highlights Jesus’ appearance to Mary Magadalene. Mary has been consistently present as a follower of Jesus in his ministry, through his death, and now in his resurrection. Her unwavering devotion and love for Christ are worth highlighting. Kuefler’s story is a wonderful read-along that explores similar feelings and experiences to Mary’s. The digger is devoted to a flower he discovers, he tends daily to its needs and is heartbroken when Dozer kills it. Even in death, Digger’s devotion remains as he takes the flowers seeds to nurture new life. Not even death could separate Mary from Jesus, or the Digger from the flower—their devotion remained constant and they were both surprised by joy of resurrection. Through this text and story, we are invited to share our own experiences of resurrection. Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia!
