10th Sunday After Pentecost
Year 3: August 13, 2017
Preaching Text: Acts 2:37-42
Rain Fish by Lois Ehlert
(Written for ages 3-6)
Comment: These four weeks focused on the sacraments invite us to consider their meaning within our lives. Professor Matt Skinner explores that for the post-Resurrection time in which Peter is preaching, “[baptism] becomes itself an image of resurrection, of new life emerging from death.” (http://www.workingpreacher.org/preaching.aspx?commentary_id=51) Ehlert’s fish are images of new life emerging from death. Rain water has a transforming power over trash and debris, setting free the fish hidden within. Through the lens of rain water, Ehlert reveals their true identity. Similarly, through the lens of baptismal waters, God reveals our true identity. In this text and story we witness and are invited to share our own stories of baptism and transformation.
