Preaching Text: Romans 6:1-11
Blue Ethel by Jennifer Black Reinhardt
(Written for ages 4-7)
Comment: In his introduction to this preaching series on sacraments, Rev. Karl Jacobson refers to baptism as a daily event, “not something once done, now finished, but once done, now lived in.” We hear reflections of this in the Romans text as well, baptized into Christ, we are called to walk in newness of life. Ethel the cat experiences an unexpected baptism of sorts when she is bathed in blue after rolling on sidewalk chalk. This experience brings about a newness into Ethel’s daily life, now awash in colorful hues. As you reflect upon this text and story, invite your congregants to consider how the new life of baptism might be experienced daily in their own lives.
