Year 4: August 26, 2018
Preaching Text: Mark 10:17-31
Mine by Caryn Rivadeneira
(Written for ages 0-3)
Comment: Young children (and many adults as well) can identify with the shock and grief the man with many possessions experiences as he walks away pondering Jesus’ challenge. From an early age we begin using the label of “mine.” Can one get over the initial shock and grief of giving away what’s “mine” and find joy in the process? The counting book Mine suggests that people build up the joyful community when what’s “mine” is shared and become “ours.” She explains in her note to parents at the end that we “begin to expand the circle of belonging” when we share our belongings with others. This text and story challenge us to consider our own connection to the “mines” in our own lives. Invite your congregants to remember what they have felt and experienced when trying to hold on to possessions versus times they shared or even gave things away.
**The book used for this Sunday will not be published until August 14. The link above will send you to the preorder form. If you cannot get this book in time, please be sure to check out our stewardship bibliography for many additional books that work well with these texts.**
