Preaching Text: Ruth 3:1-18
Ira Crumb Makes a Pretty Good Friend by Naseem Hrab
(Written for ages 34-8)
Comment: “My daughter, I need to seek some security for you, so that it may be well with you,” Naomi says to Ruth. She knows that her daughter-in-law is a stranger in a strange land without a true sense of security and belonging. When Ira Crumb becomes the new kid, he’s also a stranger in a strange land. Both Ira and Ruth take action to find their own place of belonging in the fabric of the new societies in which they are living. Ruth finds security and belonging with her relative Boaz and Ira finds security and belonging with Malcom, who was once a new kid himself. This text and story invite us to consider our own experiences of being strangers and welcoming strangers.
