Narrative Lectionary Preaching Text: Luke 7:36-50

Smelly Bill: Love Stinks by Daniel Postgate

(Written for ages 5-9)

Comment: In this text we encounter a woman who is looked down upon as unclean showing great love and hospitality towards Jesus. Smelly dog Bill’s experience is not unlike the woman’s from this passage in Luke. Bill is looked down upon as unclean in his community and when he attends the dog show, people jeer and laugh at him. In the end, he shows the greatest love when he dives into the mucky bog to save Peach. In both of these stories a lavish love was shown from unexpected characters. As you read this text and story, invite your congregation to share their own experiences of unexpected hospitality, gratitude, care, or love.
