The Branch by Mireille Messier
(Written for ages 5-9)
Comment: In this reading we experience Jesus healing a slave who is near death and bringing a man who has died back to life. Through his actions, he brings hope to situations that are seemingly hopeless. In Messier’s story, a girl feels hopeless when her favorite branch is broken in an ice storm. Her neighbor is moved by compassion and uses his skills as a woodworker to help give her beloved branch a new life as a swing. When moved by compassion, both Jesus and Mr. Frank help bring about unexpected outcomes in moments where it feels like it will be hard to find anything hopeful to cling to. This text and story invite us to reflect upon the ways we have found unexpected hope and possibility in experiences that seemed hopeless or impossible.
