Comment: O. Wesley Allen Jr. suggests congregations are most likely to connect to the issue concerning “faithful identity to a community’s tradition in light of ever-changing circumstances.” Our congregations struggle with conflict as we ask many questions. (What interpretations of scripture should be followed? Who is welcome in our communities? How do we engage with new technology?) How do we function as communities when we are often divided by our questions? Letters and numbers argue about who belongs in Boldt’s story, until finally, they realize the book has room for all of them. As you read this text and story, consider how your congregation can work to be in community even in the midst of disagreement.
