Comment: “Dear friends, let’s love each other, because love is from God, and everyone who loves is born from God and knows God.” This text invites us to wonder about what it means to be loved by God and to love and be loved by one another. It is especially important to wonder with young children about how and when they feel loved and how and when they express love. Where, too, do they worry about the absence of love and what that might mean? Matt de la Peña’s book explores the topic of love and how it permeates all aspects of life. He also touches on moments where the absence of love and the presence of fear are felt. Ultimately, his story is grounded in the imperfect, yet beautiful expressions of human love that carry us through life. In these moments of connection and love, may we see and be reminded of the great love God has for each of us.
