A Family is a Family is a Family by Sara O’Leary

(Written for ages 4-7)

Comment: “Where you go, I will go; where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God.” In this statement Ruth is declaring her loyalty to Naomi and reiterating that they are family. Their family of two widowed women did not fit their cultures traditional mold of a family. Nevertheless, this difference does not change their devotion or loyalty towards one another. Love makes a family. In O’Leary’s story, school children share the stories of their families, which are all very different. The children discover that there are many ways to be a family. This text and story invite use to celebrate all of our different families and the love that weaves us together.
