Preaching Text: Ruth 2:1-23
Be Kind by Pat Zietlow Miller
(Written for ages 3-7)
Comment: In her commentary on this text, Professor Kathryn M. Schifferdecker highlights God’s action “through the faithfulness of ordinary human beings. God’s hesed (kindness) is embodied in human action.” We, too, are invited into the faithful love, mercy, and kindness of God for all of God’s children through our actions. In Be Kind, a child contemplates what it actually means to be kind and how they might show kindness to a classmate when she has an embarrassing accident. The child’s thoughts go beyond one particular instance as they consider the cyclical nature of sharing kindness, receiving it, and sharing it once again. We can also contemplate the meaning of kindness and consider where we see kindness at work in this text and where we see it at work in the world. Inspired by this text and story, may be seek to embody God’s hesed in our daily lives.
