Baby’s Got the Blues by Carol Diggory Shields

(Written for ages 3-6)

Comment: The lament of this Psalm is universal and familiar to people of all ages and in all places. How long must we endure situations that cause us to suffer or give us the blues? The psalmist does not leave us lost in the how longs, but reminds us that even amidst our grief, there is a hopefulness and trust in God whose loving presence in constant. Baby’s experience mirrors that of the Psalm in singing the blues about everything about a baby that makes you want to cry. It seems the baby will always be mired in the blues, but then mama scoops baby up and the blues are overshadowed by “I love yous.” As you reflect upon this text and story, invite your congregation to share their own experiences of crying out, “How long” and receiving God’s “I love yous.”
