Preaching Text: 1 John 1:1-4
In The Red Canoe by Leslie A. Davidson
(Written for ages 4-8)
Comment: This prologue to 1 John highlights the importance of the incarnational nature of Christ. A relationship with Christ comes not just from a spiritual revelation, but through physical senses as well. The writer wishes to share their experience of seeing, hearing, and touching the Word made flesh. Davidson’s story highlights the powerful experience of an elder sharing something beloved through the senses. Guided by her grandfather in the red canoe, a young girl comes to know the wonders of the watery world through her senses. Like the writer of 1 John, the grandfather seeks to bring his granddaughter into relationship with that which he loves. As we read this text and story, we are invited to consider the people who’ve guided us to grow in our relationship with Christ and how we experience the incarnational God through sight, sound, and touch in the world.
