Preaching Text: Luke 16:19-31

Betty Bunny Wants Everything by Michael B. Kaplan

(Written for ages 5-9)

Comment: In her commentary on this text, Helen Montgomery Debevoise speaks of Abraham’s response to the rich man: “People have been given what they need to live faithful lives. They will listen, or they will not. They will respond, or they will not.” (Feasting on the Word: Year C, Vol. 4, p 120) Sometimes our desires are so strong, they interfere with our seeing or hearing as they did for the rich man and they may for his brothers. This is what happens for Betty Bunny. Betty wants more, more, more and is unable to hear the wisdom of her family. Neither the rich man nor Betty are truly transformed by the experiences meant to teach them a lesson, but perhaps we can be. This text and story invite us to pay attention to the wisdom around us and respond to God.
