Lola’s Rules for Friendship by Jenna McCarthy
(Written for ages 4-8)
Comment: This week’s text sets the stage for God’s giving the ten commandments. First God establishes a relationship with the people, then God gives them the law. The 10 Commandments are meant to guide us in relationship with one another and with God. Lola has many wonderful friends, but after moving is worried about finding new friends. She reflects on the friendships she already has to write a story about the rules for friendship. Like the ten commandments, Lola’s rules are not intended to be burdensome, but designed to help her think about what it means to be a good friend. This text and story invite us to consider how we see God’s law at work in our own lives and relationships. Through the guidance of God’s love and law, may our lives reflect our love for God, our neighbors, and ourselves.
