Preaching Text: Jeremiah 29:1, 4-14
Milly and the Macy’s Parade by Shana Corey
(Written for ages 5-9)
Comment: As she concludes her commentary on this text, Professor Juliana Claassens highlights how this text might connect to our own congregants: “Many of us today may encounter situations that cannot be changed… Perhaps even more important than figuring out how to live amidst these less-than-perfect circumstances is the question of how one manages to find joy while being in exile.” (https//www.workingpreacher.org/preaching.aspx?commentary_id=3318) Corey’s story presents a lovely example of this kind of resilient living. Milly, a young immigrant from Poland living in New York City, comes up with a plan to help her fellow immigrants find joy in their current situation. This text and story invite us to share our own stories of resiliency and finding joy in the midst of unexpected devastation or grief.
