Sprout Helps Out by Rosie Winstead

(Written for ages 3-5)

Comment: When discussing this text with children, focus on the first section, where the first deacons are called to help serve the needs of the community. In Winstead’s book, Sprout helps her family; although it doesn’t always appear that Sprout’s help is actually helpful, the story’s ending affirms that it is appreciated by the entire family. In the early church there was a need for people to fill different roles to care for the spiritual and physical health of the community. We experience the same issues in our churches, families, and schools. As you read this text and story, wonder together with the children of your church about the ways they can help participate in meeting the needs of their community.
