I’m My Own Dog by David Ezra Stein

(Written for ages 4-7)

Comment: In this text, Jesus turns the disciple’s understanding of leadership upside-down. He is calling them to view leadership through the lens of service. In Stein’s story, there’s a similar upside-down shift in perspective as a dog who is adamantly not owned by anyone, becomes attached to a human best friend. The dog calls readers to view “being my own dog” through the lens of companionship. This text and story invite us to consider the lenses with which we view the world; this is a great week to share stories of perspectives, understandings, and beliefs turned upside-down.
