Transfiguration of the Lord
Year 3: February 26, 2017
Preaching Text: Luke 9:28-45
They All Saw A Cat by Brendan Wenzel
(Written for ages 4-8)
Comment: In his commentary on this text, Mark G. Vitalis says Luke is “recounting history, providing explanations for why Jesus’ disciples did not fully understand him during his ministry, and laying a foundation for his readers to perceive and believe.” Jesus’ disciples and the people who came to him for healing or to learn from him all saw Jesus, but none of them fully saw him. Even after they see him transfigured, the disciples still don’t seem to grasp the whole picture of who Jesus is and what he is doing and will do. In Wenzel’s story, many creatures see the same cat in many different ways, but none of them fully see him; each creature is limited by their own perspective. On Transfiguration Sunday we take time to reflect upon Jesus’ identity-this text and story invite us to wonder how our own visions of Jesus might be limited by our own perspectives.
