Preaching Text: Luke 4:14-30
Seaver the Weaver by Paul Czajak
(Written for ages 4-8)
Comment: “I assure you that no prophet is welcome in the prophet’s hometown.” Like Jesus, Seaver is prophet, inspired and filled with wisdom; he also experiences being misunderstood and rejected by his community. In the text, Jesus’ teachings fill the people of his hometown with rage and they seek to run him out of town. In Czajak’s story, Seaver’s family is finally able to see and benefit from the value of his teachings. This text and story invite us to consider how we respond to people when they do not align with our expectations of who they should be or how they should act. When we meet people who do not match our expectations, will we be moved to act in ways of anger and rejection, or will we be open to welcome and learn from those who are different?
