Preaching Text: Ephesians 4:1-16
Head, Body, Legs: A Story from Liberia retold by Won-Ldy Paye & Margaret H. Lippert
(Written for ages 4-8)
Comment: In this section of the Epistle, Paul explains how God calls we who are diverse and many to be knit together into the one body of Christ. While we have different gifts, we are unified in the body of Christ and called to build ourselves us in love. This folk story from Liberia is my absolute favorite resource for talking with children about what it means for our diverse communities to be knit together as the body of Christ. Head, arms, body, and legs are quite limited in what they can accomplish until they join together to work for the same purposes. This text and story invite us to name and celebrate the gifts we bring to the body of Christ and how we work together to build it up in love.
