Preaching Text: Psalm 27:1-6
Brave Irene by William Steig
(Written for ages 4-8)
Comment: In Brave Irene, Irene’s mother, a seamstress, becomes very ill the night of a fancy ball. But Mrs. Bobbin is the seamstress for the duchess and has the duchess’s dress at their home. Her illness will keep her from delivering the dress to the duchess until Irene decides to take it. Irene walks through deep snow, facing the wind that keeps trying to drive her back, through injuries and losses, all to deliver the dress to the duchess on her mother’s behalf. Irene is brave, despite enemies and obstacles, because she is going forward on behalf of someone she loves, and because she is doing something that matters. In our Psalm, the writer is able to do the same thing—to be brave, despite enemies and obstacles. The Lord is the light for the Psalmist, and the reason that the writer can move forward. The Psalmist, like Irene, is pursuing something that matters. We, too, can be brave, like Irene, and lift up our heads, like the Psalmist, even when we face enemies and obstacles. We know that we are going forward on behalf of the Lord whom we love, and who is our light. We can move forward, no matter what we face, because the Lord gives us a purpose to pursue, and we are doing something that matters.
