Preaching Text: Luke 13:1-9, 31-35
No, No, Gnome! by Ashlyn Anstee
(Written for ages 4-8)
Comment: When approaching this text with children, it’s valuable to talk about what happens when we make mistakes or fail to produce fruit. (When mentioning the latter, one might draw parallels to the fruits of the Spirit.) Gnome’s story is a silly one, but it illustrates these ideas in a very accessible way for young children. After Gnome practically destroys the class garden, things become miserable, not just for Gnome, but everyone. Gnome discovers the lesson of this text: we can make tiny or colossal mistakes, we can live fruitlessly, yet we are still invited to repent, turn our life around, and bear good fruit. This text and story invite us to share our own experiences of fruitlessness turned to fruitfulness, and the joy we can harvest as a community nurtured and nourished by Christ.
