Mommy, Do You Love Me? by Jeanne Willis
(Written for ages 5-9)
Comment: The selection and ordering of these texts is interesting. Were we to leave off the last selection from chapter 31, we might feel pretty hopeless about the whole situation. Yet with this ending, we are reminded through the language of covenant that even when we screw up, we belong to God who loves us. Willis speaks of this kind of love between Mommy and Little Chick “Sometimes you make me mad, and sometimes you make me sad, but no matter what you say or do, I will always love you… because I am your mommy.” As you wonder what it means to be in covenant relationship with God, consider rereading this line to the children of your church, substituting the last phrase with “because I am your God.”
