Preaching Text: Daniel 6:6-27
Frog by Susan Cooper
(Written for ages 5-9)
Comment: It’s interesting that readers experience Daniel’s evening in the den of lions through the perspective of King Darius rather than Daniel. We’re left to wonder and imagine what Daniel’s overnight with the lions might have entailed; yet we have an intimate understanding of Darius’s worry and sleeplessness. After witnessing Daniel’s faithfulness, perseverance, and deliverance by God, Darius is transformed. “Instead of an ineffective, bumbling ruler, Darius now embodies a decisive king, condemning the guilty, rescuing the faithful and promoting worship of the Lord.” Frog is the story of a boy, Joe, who is transformed into a swimmer after witnessing the struggle, faithfulness, and survival of a frog trapped in a swimming pool. As you reflect on the transformations of Darius and Joe, invite your congregation to share stories of faith and courage that inspire them to be doers of justice and faithful disciples.
