Comment: This text highlights the important role the child Samuel plays in listening and sharing important information with his mentor Eli. Whelan’s book is also the story of children who have been instructed by their elders to listen for valuable information. After they bring big news to share with the adults, Ella May asks her daddy, “Is our listening over?” He responds, “…your listening is just begun.” This text and story highlight the wisdom that children carry from listening to the world around them. How have children in your community challenged you to see and hear in new ways?
