Fourth Sunday of Advent
Year 3: December 24, 2017
Preaching Text: John 1:1-18
Nativity by Cynthia Rylant
(Written for ages 4-8)
Comment: Christmas Eve is a time to share the story of Jesus’ birth and explore the meaning of the incarnation, the Word made flesh, and what it means for our lives and our world. Using the King James Version, Rylant illustrates a story for children that merges Jesus’ birth with the Beatitudes, ending with “blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” It is a simple approach, yet a beautiful way to show the meaning of “the Word became flesh and lived among us…” Our celebration of Christmas isn’t simply about his birth, but celebrates who Jesus was and is, and all that he has to teach us about God, ourselves, and one another. As you read this text and story, invite your congregants to share how knowing God through Jesus inspire them to live and act in the world
