Preaching Text: Ephesians 2:11-22
Enemy Pie by Derek Munson
(Written for ages 5-9)
Comment: In her commentary on this text, Mary Hinkle Shore highlights that “from people on the opposite side of culture wars, to that nemesis at work or the bully at school, most of us have an enemy who is not entirely an abstraction.” Enemy Pie explores this reality in a young boy’s world when his dad cooks up a plan to help him get rid of his enemy once and for all. The brilliance of enemy pie is that it rids a person of their enemy by turning them into a friend. The pie works in the boys’ lives much as Jesus works in our lives, allowing hostility to be overcome and creating opportunities for peace and reconciliation. This text and story challenge us to name our enemies and consider how our relationship to them might be reshaped through Christ.
